Beyond flooded roads and disrupted services, the impact extends to livelihoods, businesses, transportation, electricity and access to essential services while disproportionately increasing risks for women, children, older persons and persons with disabilities.

Flooding is also a peace and security concern. Displacement, pressure on limited resources and humanitarian assistance, community grievances, and strain on public institutions can deepen existing vulnerabilities and tensions.

Building resilient communities requires moving from reaction to prevention and early action through:

Stronger early warning and early response systems

Climate-resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness

Inclusive, conflict-sensitive humanitarian response

Coordinated action among government, communities, civil society and other stakeholders

Through its National Early Warning System (NEWS) and Community Response Networks (CRNs), WANEP-Nigeria continues to strengthen community resilience, promote early action and foster collaboration for sustainable disaster risk reduction and social cohesion.
