The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP-Nigeria) is currently implementing the Research and Action for Peace (RECAP) Project in Ilorin, Kwara State. The 3- day Training Workshop on Conflict Prevention, Violent Extremism, Crisis Management and Peacebuilding aims to equipped community stakeholders in Kwara State with skills to wade into conflict and ensure peaceful resolution. The training which has over twenty stakeholders in attendance will hold from February 18 to 20, 2025

Today, we shine our #WcW spotlight on Dr. Fatima Akilu, a woman whose work has had a transformative impact on mental health, peacebuilding, and the fight against violent extremism in Nigeria.

Dr. Akilu serves as the Executive Director of Neem Foundation, where she leads the foundation’s Psychosocial Services Component, delivering crucial mental health support to communities impacted by conflict and trauma.

A trained psychologist with over 20 years of experience, Dr. Akilu holds a Master’s Degree and PhD in Psychology from the University of Reading, UK. Her journey in mental health has been marked by dedication to research and teaching, particularly on topics like homelessness and the complex relationship between ethnicity and mental health.

For over 12 years, she shared her expertise as an Adjunct Professor of General Psychology at Broome Community College, USA, shaping the minds of future psychologists.

In addition to her mental health work, Dr. Akilu brings valuable experience in media and communication. She has served as Chairman of the Editorial Board of a leading Nigerian newspaper and worked as Head of Communication to the Senior Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Millennium Development Goals. Her expertise in strategic communication led her to pioneer Nigeria’s Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) programme, where she held the role of Director for Behavioural Analysis and Strategic Communications at the Office of the National Security Adviser until 2015.

Through her work at Neem Foundation, Dr. Akilu continues to empower communities and advocate for mental health support in peacebuilding efforts, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s fight for peace and security. Her journey serves as an inspiration, showing the power of resilience, compassion, and dedication to the greater good.
