As of August 2021, 650 incidents were recorded in the Monthly Conflict Census from WANEP National Early Warning System (NEWS)1. The incidents (650) recorded in the month represent a decrease of 81 incidents compared to the 731 incidents recorded in the NEWS in July 20212 The reduction in incidents recorded in the reporting period is partly attributable to the sustained government interventions across the thematic areas. A cumulative fatality of 1,415 and 27,846 injuries/infected cases emanating from criminal attacks, road accidents and incidents of environmental security including epidemics and COVID-19 were recorded in August 20213. Out of the total fatalities recorded in the month, COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the death of 320 people with 18,523 infected cases, while Cholera resulted in the death of 213 people with 8,983 suspected cases4
.As shown in the thematic graph below, Violent Extremism and Organised Crime recorded a total of 684 people, accounting for the highest fatality of the total number of fatalities (1,415) recorded in the monthly census, while Environmental Security theme recorded 628 deaths5 Also, Democracy and Governance theme recorded 102 deaths, while Gender, Peace and Security thematic area recorded one fatality in the reporting period6 .( see annex for the monthly census).
